PROJECT MISSIONS

This postdoctoral position is part of the strategic ERASME program (PIA4, “ExcellencES”) and responds to societal, environmental, and/or academic challenges.

The postdoctoral researcher in sociology will be tasked with documenting the utopian aspirations of UPEC students through the method of photo-elicitation. The project hypothesizes that “practical utopias” emerge from students’ everyday experiences of precarity, housing issues, discrimination, or misalignment between institutional norms and student expectations. This postdoc aims to explore the ideals expressed by actors — here, the students — as a reaction against the reduction of their situations to mere quantitative assessments, which tend to represent their realities impersonally, especially in the field of housing.

The postdoc will be supervised by Séverine Chauvel, Associate Professor of Sociology at LIRTES.

ACTIVITIES

The postdoctoral researcher will dedicate themselves to the implementation of the proposed research project, which includes:

• Conducting photo-elicitation interviews: sample recruitment, interviews, and transcription
• Organizing a pilot phase followed by extensive data collection (50 students across 5 UPEC faculties)
• Thematic coding and cross-analysis
• Conducting ethnographic fieldwork within the faculties
• Co-organizing a traveling exhibition and participating in outreach events
• Writing scientific publications in collaboration with the project leader
• Participating in laboratory life and project monitoring meetings (PARSIE, LIRTES)

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND CONTEXT

The candidate will be based at LIRTES (Interdisciplinary Research Laboratory on Transformations of Educational and Social Practices), a research unit (UR 7313) at Université Paris-Est-Créteil (UPEC). The unit hosts tenured researchers, PhDs, postdocs, doctoral candidates, and technical staff in a close-knit organization fostering a dynamic, diverse, and productive research environment. The unit focuses research on three themes:

• "Experience, Training, Contextualized Learning" (EFAC)
• "Social Intervention(s): Policies, Actors, Territories" (ISPAT)
• "Public Issues, Social Relations, and Inequality Prevention in Education" (PARSIE)
• The researcher will work in a supportive team committed to professional development and intellectual discovery and will have the opportunity to advance their own research projects.
• The researcher will benefit from project support, collaborators, and networks to enhance academic skills and career progression.
• Additional funding will be available for research dissemination activities and participation in international scientific events.
